Magic Decks #3 – Ice Queen

MD003 - Ice Queen LongIn this week’s ‘Magic Decks’, we will be looking at the new thing in town; the Frost Mage!

Being dominated by the Warlock Rush deck the last few weeks, the meta has slowly evolved into the Frost Mage deck, which is similar to Reckful’s Mage in the Innkeeper’s Invitational. The Frost Mage deck is a control deck that originated from South Korea; its aim is to last long enough before it can finish off the opponent.

Decklist

Mage (21):

  • Frost Nova x2
  • Frostbolt x2
  • Arcane Intellect x2
  • Cone of Cold x2
  • Counterspell x2
  • Ice Barrier x2
  • Ice Block x2
  • Fireball x2
  • Blizzard x2
  • Flamestrike x2
  • Pyroblast

Neutral (9):

  • Doomsayer
  • Loot Hoarder
  • Novice Engineer x2
  • Alexstrasza
  • Mountain Giant x2
  • Molten Giant x2

Strategy

The difference between this deck and Reckful’s is that this deck relies more on minions whereas Reckful’s aims to finish off the opponent in a few turns. Frost Nova, Cone of Cold, and Blizzard aim to stop the opponent’s minion waves, and if they are not dead, Flamestrike will do the job.

Secrets like Ice Block and Ice Barrier provide an additional dimension to your survivability, allowing you to last longer and prepare the necessary cards.

With spells and delaying tactics, you maintain your hand size while draining the opponent’s, and then proceed to finish him off with all the hard-hitting cards!

Pros

  • Controlling rush or aggressive decks

Cons

  • Not as strong against spell-oriented decks
  • Minions with Charge or Silence

Counter-Counter!

  • Use Counterspell at appropriate moments
  • Finish off the problematic minions with your spells
