Techniques Training #8 – Divine Intervention

Techniques Training LongIn this week’s Technique Training, we will be looking at Divine Shields, and how they affect the game.

Divine Shield is an ability that allows the minion to negate the next damage it receives. Upon negating, it is removed. Generally used by Paladins, it is a very strong ability, as board control can be easily established through trades, where opponent minions die and yours do not.

Counters

  • Using any low damage abilities or attacks to remove the Divine Shield (i.e. Mage’s Fireblast, or Knife Juggler‘s ability)
  • Silence or Transformation abilities will remove the Divine Shield (i.e. Spellbreaker, or Hex)
  • Abilities that absorb Divine Shields (i.e. Blood Knight)

Spells with both damage and an additional component will only have its damage removed by the Divine Shield; Blizzard, for example, will have its damage negated but the minion will still be Frozen.

Engaging in combat against minions with zero attack will not destroy the Divine Shield, as no damage is taken. Thus, the yard for removal of a Divine Shield is damage; be it any amount.

There is one card that is neither a neutral or Paladin card; the Shaman‘s legendary, Al’Akir the Windlord, is a unique case.

Examples of cards that grant or have Divine Shields:

  • Hand of Protection
  • Argent Protector
  • Argent Commander
