Magic Decks #6 – Mid Range Mage

MD003 - Ice Queen LongWe will be looking at a very popular deck in the current meta; the Mid Range Mage.

As compared to the Frost Mage, where you delay the opponent’s progress before releasing the big guns, or the Aggro Mage, where you rush down the opponent instantly, this deck is about having a good mix of board control and spells to wear down the opponent.

We will go through the decklist before explaining about it in further detail:

Mage (17):

  • Arcane Missiles x2
  • Fireball x2
  • Mana Wyrm x2
  • Sorcerer’s Apprentice x2
  • Water Elemental x2
  • Mirror Image x2
  • Frostbolt x2
  • Flamestrike x1
  • Pyroblast x2

Neutral (13):

  • Novice Engineer x2
  • Argent Squire x2
  • Harvest Golem x2
  • Dark Iron Dwarf x2
  • Defender of Argus x2
  • Argent Commander x2
  • Sylvanas Windrunner x1

Analysis

With a large amount of fairly low casting minions and spells, establish board control while wearing down the opponent. Lastly, end the game with a big, fat, Pyroblast. Arcane Missiles can be used to put the Warlock Rush deck at bay by destroying his precious Blood Imps or any irritating low health minions (i.e. Faerie Dragon.)

A good hand will be one that is low cost and efficient (i.e. Mana WyrmCoinMirror Image or Novice Engineer for Cycling); cycling means to have a card that recycles itself though the draw effect, keeping your hand size healthy.
