Card Mania! #10 – Leeeeroy Jenkins

Leeroy JenkinsHave you ever wondered about how Leeroy Jenkins and the quote ‘At least I have Chicken’ came about? In this week’s ‘Card Mania!’, we will be featuring Leeeeeeeeeeroy Jenkins!

With a remarkably high attack but low health for a 4 cost card, he is what one will call a cheap “glass cannon” minion!

Lore (from hearthstone.gamepedia.com)

Leeroy Jenkins (aka Ben Schulz) is one of the most famous players/characters in World of Warcraft. The video has become a World of Warcraft phenomenon. After much debate and controversy, <PALS FOR LIFE>, Leeroy’s guild, have admitted that this was a staged promotional video. They maintain, however, that it is essentially a faithful re-enactment of a true event.

  • Type: Minion
  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Cost: 4
  • Stats: 6/2
  • Ability: Charge. Battlecry: Summon two 1/1 Whelps for your opponent.
  • Class: Any
  • Crafting Cost: 1600/3200 (Golden) Arcane Dust
  • Disenchant: 400/1600 (Golden) Arcane Dust

Just like how the World of Warcraft player himself handled his guild’s raids, by rushing straight into combat, this minion comes with Charge. Therefore, the typical use of this card is to combo it with attack-buffing cards such as Dark Iron Dwarf to deal a quick burst of damage to the opponent’s hero. This is particularly useful in a mid-late game scenario where both sides will be at a significantly lower health (in an ideal situation) and the burst combo might just be enough to do an One-Turn-Kill (OTK.)

Useful cards

A few possible other cards include Power Overwhelming from the Warlock class, or the Shattered Sun Cleric. Imbue Windfury through Windspeaker for double the impact!

Do not expect Leeroy Jenkins to stay on the battlefield for long given how easy it is to remove him since he only has 2 health. Therefore, aim to fully utilise his damage output when you play him. Alternate possibilities include using Taunt minions to redirect minion fire from him.

That being said, taunt minions will be a problem for Leeroy Jenkins as it will defeat his purpose of dishing large amounts of damage directly. Hence, have some form of minion removal cards in your deck, such as Shadow Word: Pain to ensure that his attacks get through.

  • Control decks that allow Leeroy Jenkins to Charge his way straight at the opponent’s champion.
  • Attack-buffing Cards
  • Has problems against taunt
